A Long-Standing Blood Shortage That Needs to End

by Dr. Frances Compton

As a community blood supplier, we are asking for your help.

We need all hands on deck to replenish our community blood supply. While our community is (thankfully!) recovering and rebounding from the pandemic, blood donations still lag behind. The COVID-19 pandemic hit us all hard in many ways, but the community blood supply has yet to bounce back.

We think the blood shortage is due to several reasons.

One concern is that the essence of blood donation has changed, and maybe forever? Mobile blood drive locations such as busy office buildings and school events are not what they used to be. Combine this with a busy hospital network that is rebounding from postponed surgeries and delayed disease treatments – this does not make for an adequate blood supply!

What can you do to help?

Tell your family and friends about the need to replenish the local blood supply. Our hospital patients are counting on everyone’s support. We cannot sit by anymore, it is time for ACTION. Please make an appointment today at a donor center or mobile blood drive near you. If you are working or schooling from home, please go to our website to find a location that you can donate at today.

Why donate, you ask?

Because the current state of our blood supply is not sustainable. When I visit our lab in the afternoons, our blood storage refrigerators are empty. We rely on the previous day’s donations to provide blood to our local hospitals each morning, and this cannot continue. We must ACT. Why, do you ask? Because this is LIFE-SAVING. You donating today saves a life tomorrow. How else can a simple act have such a profound effect? There are not many other ways that we are empowered to help those in need in such a significant way.

“Do the right thing, even when no one is watching.”

You may never know the mother, father, daughter, son, sister, brother or friend that receives your blood donation. Take action for our community and those that need our help. Be assured that your donation will make a difference, and that meaningful change happens when you choose to act.
